Hairy Woodpeckers

A pair of Hairy Woodpeckers
come to the nut feeders by my office window.
I seldom take their picture.

Today they were on the deck.
The male sounded his arrival.

These are medium sized woodpeckers,
9 inches (22.5 cm) head to tail.

Much bigger than the small look-a-like Downy Woodpecker.

I was so pleased they stayed for pictures.

  3. I've yet to see a Hairy, but I can see how one can easily think they have. I'll have to remember the size difference. Lovely shots Sherry. :c)

  4. I love woodpeckers...I get a lot here as there is a lot of dead wood in the garden. They are a joy to see, thank you Sherry.

  5. Dear Susie,
I have a Nikon D50. I do not think they make it anymore. A D70 or D90 would be about the same I think.
I do enjoy taking the pictures of the birds and bugs and blooms in my backyard!
    Glad you enjoy them too.

  6. Dear Vikki,
I do love the birds. It has been so cool the butterflies have not been out so I have been spending time with the birds!
It will warm up soon and I will be chasing bees and butterflies.

  7. Dear Lisa,
They are handsome and big! As big as the Red-bellies.
The Downy is little and looks similiar. I would love to see a Hairy and a Downy on the peanuts at the same time. I think it would be a great picture.

  8. Dear Jayne,
The Hairy is big. Once you see one you will immediately know it is a Hairy. One pair lives near. Last year they had two babies. I hope they are successful again this year.

  9. Dear Cheryl,
The Woodpeckers come to my gardens for the nuts. I do not have any dead wood for them. I think the little woods near by does. I too love the Woodpeckers.
