Lavender Harvest

I began the lavender harvest.

Each year I have a blessing ritual.

The first day of harvest is a celebration.

I always leave a few blooms for the butterflies.

A pair of Spring Azures nectered in the Chinese Lilac
while I harvested the lavender that grows underneath.
June is lavender month.

  1. Oh Lavender - one of the loveliest scents I think. Happy harvesting Q!

  2. I have tried for years to grow lavender. This spring a small area survived the winter but died a few weeks after it began leafing out. It is so lovely but just hates our clay soil and cold, rainy springs.

  3. Sherry, what a beautiful tradition. These photos are so great that I can almost smell the lavender! :)

Thanks for sharing these; and sorry that I haven't been around much lately.

    Love, Vikki.

  4. It is so fragrant and instantly recognisable. I don't have enough to harvest so I'll leave mine to the butterflies!

  5. Dear Sherry....

Poppi Riley and I love lavender. To be amongst the precious flowers, the fragrance drifting in the air as you cut the blooms.

I hang lavender to dry in my inglenook.....it scents the whole house.......is there anything more delightful.

    Happy June my friend......

  6. Well, hey Sherry! Somehow you fell off my bloglines list. Thanks for stopping by today and making me realize you were not coming up in the list of... cough... 70+ blogs on there. :c) Beautiful lavender!

  7. Thanks for the reminder I need to be checking mine soon. It is starting to bloom, and I like to catch it just as it is opening.

    Lovely photos!

  8. I wasn't sure exactly when to harvest it. Last year I waited until close to the end of summer.

Three out of the four I planted are doing great, so I'll soon be harvesting more lavender too. I love the smell of it!

  9. Sherry, my Lavender is thriving so well! Tiny plants last year - enormous this year. And, I planted even more. The bumbles love it.

    I enjoyed your photos. Lovely!

  10. Mmm...lavender is my favorit scent!
Is it difficult to grow? And, do you think my deer would harvest it before I could? Love the shots!

  12. Harvesting already? How nice. I too love the smell of lavender. I actually had a lavender plant survive the winter indoors in a pot this year. Some herbs just die when I bring them in, but this lavender is alive and well!
I like that - a blessing ritual for your lavender harvest.
    How lovely!
