Virginia Creeper Sphinx

I saw the Sphinx on the ivy.

I did not know her name.

She is new to my gardens.

My bug book names her the Hog Sphinx.
Also known as the Virginia Creeper Sphinx.
I call her gorgeous.

I think I will go on another walk about.
I wonder who is in the lilies?

  4. She is very beautiful - what unimaginative person thought of the word Hog to go alongside Sphinx!

  5. Hi Sherry!!!!!!!!! How are YOU??? I had one of these on my front porch last year and they are the most amazing things.

I think Pandora Sphinx sounds SO much better than "hog" moth. Check it out: http://bugguide.net/node/view/3937

  9. Sherry,

Nice find and wonderful photo! Yours in much greener than the browner ones I have seen. If I'm right they do not fly during the day and you could have picked it up to place it for a better background.

  13. What an interesting creature; I've only seen pictures of her before.

I so enjoyed your swallowtail yesterday, Sherry; how sweet of her to stand still for your camera. Butterflies have been few in number around here this year. Have you noticed this in your area as well?

  14. She's beautiful! Looks a very similar shape and pattern to our Poplar Hawk Moth, but so much greener! The Poplar Hawk Moth is brown in various shades.
