I also think their coloring is pretty. Anytime they come in "flocks" it is annoying! I never mind the flocks of Gold Finches or Waxwings!! I keep working on finding some way of enjoying the Grackles. My husband says the Starlings, "are the most dangerous bird know to man." Maybe because I am shooing them all the time or asking him to do so!
SherryQhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02473455565144414399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27765182.post-58034757713345539322007-04-26T08:19:00.000-05:002007-04-26T08:19:00.000-05:00Dear Mary,I so understand the Grackles, Starlings ...Dear Mary,
I so understand the Grackles, Starlings and Blackbirds cleaning out the feeders!!During breeding they will eat insects mostly than back to our feeders. I have a tray station set up on a back patio so the big birds and the squirrels have a place to eat. They are more comfortable at the tray and will leave the the small feeders alone, for the most part. I see the Grackles like peanuts and "woodpecker" food. Thus I put a couple of scoops of that on the tray with the sunflower seed.
I have seen the Mocking Birds chase the Grackles and the Starlings!
The Blue Jays also will give them a chase. Coopers Hawk sends all the birds flying.
I spend as much time outside as I am able and the Common Grackles and the Starlings stay away when I am out.
Last winter I had to make "peace" with the Starlings. I put small feeders out for the small birds. Which means I refill often!
I am learning to see ALL the Icterids as beautiful. It is interesting.
I feed year round too.
I will see if I can come up with a few more ideas on how to keep the Common Grackle and the Starlings at a distance.
SherryQhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02473455565144414399noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27765182.post-16690065949009997162007-04-26T06:15:00.000-05:002007-04-26T06:15:00.000-05:00I love the way you captured him in this photo.I love the way you captured him in this photo.Sheilahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06731396546695910306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27765182.post-9110075077487138962007-04-26T05:42:00.000-05:002007-04-26T05:42:00.000-05:00They can almost be, dare I say, "pretty" when the...They can almost be, dare I say, "pretty" when they are like this. Otherwise, when they invite hundreds of their friends to come by, it's more than annoying!Jaynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14057094040409159429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27765182.post-19564407361406600852007-04-25T21:12:00.000-05:002007-04-25T21:12:00.000-05:00Sherry,I am having quite a few Common Grackles and...Sherry,

I am having quite a few Common Grackles and Starlings, Red-Winged Blackbirds wiping out my feeders. I didn't see them at all over the winter months. I getting slightly annoyed with it because I think they are monopolizing the feeders and suet and keeping my favorites away.

This is just a comment from someone who is learning... I've considered stopping the feeding and filling feeders but then I wouldn't see my favorites...

Sigh...Maryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02040099513110890878noreply@blogger.com
