A Hackberry Emperor was nectaring
in the Chinese Lilac Tree.
My husband saw him nestled in the blooms.in the Chinese Lilac Tree.
measuring about 2 inches across.

What a lovely pic. I've never even heard of a hackberry emperor butterfly. I wonder if we have any in Canada? Will have to check it out.
Our lilac tree is blooming now too. The Hackberry is the most gregarious butterfly I know of. They land on us often when we are out birding. I have several pictures of them nectaring on me. ha..
He looks like he was really enjoying that lilac... just beautiful!
Beautiful! So many flowers - they look like a carpet made for butterflies to have some food and rest. They look so soft and comfy.
The butterflies are amazing too. I've never seen this kind before.

Catching up on my reading today, I was curious about your chamomile. I've never seen anyone grow it and harvest it. How do you harvest it? I often drink chamomile tea; is this how you use yours?

These trees are so fragrant! My husband was riding his bike and he could smell the tree down the strret from our house. I cut one bloom for the dining room table and my entire house is filled with the sweet, pleasant, scent of Lilac. I have never had one land on me! I read that when the butterflies do that they are seeking salt. Many of the fruit butterflies seem to be social. I have fruit set out but no butterflies yet on any!

The blooms are huge and are hundreds of ting blooms put together like a lilac bush. Very fragrant too.
I seldom see the Hackberry. I love all the eye spots on the underwings!

Yes, I dry the blooms for tea. Easy to do. I pick just the blooms, the small flowers, and dry them in a basket on my counter. Once all dry I store in a glass cannister. I can use the dried blooms for teas ( A small about of dried flowers in a tea ball) or for hair rince.
Do try growing as it is such an easy to care for herb. I grow Roman Camomile. It is a perennial in my zone 6.

Thank you. I stood with my camera, which weighs 10 pounds, arms extended as far as I could reach and zoomed out as far as I could go for over twenty minutes taking pictures. My arms ached when I finally put them down. Being a photgrapher is hard work! LOL
I love it when the pictures turn out. I really like this series.

I am glad y'all saw this beautiful butterfly and shared these photos. We should have Hackberry Emperors but I've never seen one -- at least, I haven't seen one well enough to get an ID. I reckon I'll just have to keep watching butterflies. Such a chore! :-)

My butterfly book does have them in your area. I bet you will see one now that you are "looking" for them. I have seen one every spring for the last five years, just one sighting! I also think my job is to watch for bees, birds and butterflies! It is the best of jibs.
