In the Flint Hills, in the state of Kansas,
a 10,894 acre Tallgrass Prairie
is a National Park.

When I walked in the prairie I could feel the vastness.
I knew endless sun and endless grasses.
Prairie, as far as my eye could see.
I saw the Variegated Fritillary.
She is lovely.
Darners, Pennants and Damselflies defended their territory.
The Halloween Pennant is known as a Skimmer.
There are streams and ponds in the Prairie.
They are teaming with life!
The grasses in the Prairie are alive with Katydids,
The Eastern Collared Lizard lives in this prairie.
As do many different Grasshoppers.
We hiked for five hours.
I was hot and tired.
This is a pristine prairie.
A wonderful Sunday safari.

What a nice outing Sherry. I always feel tiny when in a prairie. The inhabitants there are mostly small too. Aren't the grasshoppers interesting in their different colors and markings.

Over 10,000 acres of prairie--wow! I am so glad they have preserved this in a National Park. What a perfect place for a safari, and you certainly found some excellent specimens, Sherry. I didn't realize there were different kinds of grasshoppers. We do have the flying ones, whatever they're called--several times I've chased after what I thought was a butterfly to photograph it, only to discover it was a flying grasshopper:)

Wide open spaces. The West's open expanses always seem to beckon to me.
Wow, I love your photography as usual. I think we have those Katydids, but we call them grasshoppers, though they are smaller than the ones I knew as grasshoppers.

It is hard for me on this relatively small island to imagine a prairie on that scale. I'd love to see one. It looks very impressive - and full of interesting wildlife.
Your photos are so detailed...makes me want to stay away from wasps and look a little closer at the lizard! We love to hike but I sure get tired easier these days! lol
