Sunday Safari

It rained two inches this morning.
I was not sure we would be able to go bug hunting.
Around noon the rain stopped and we took off.

Last week the local chapter of the Sierra Club newsletter arrived.
An article about a prairie very near to our house caught our attention.
We had planned on exploring this native Prairie when we needed a close to home spot.
Today was the day!
I was so excited to see Hummingbirds on the Prairie.
No nectar feeders here!

Common Wood Nymphs flew in the undergrowth.

The Thistles are just beginning to bloom.
They are one of my favorite wild flowers.

Another set of bugs for Bug Guide to help out with.
I just call them Thistle bugs!

These are Milkweed nymphs.

The Indigo Buntings were about.
This male appears to be molting.

They will begin their Autumn Migration soon.

The Silverspots were out

as were the Goatweed Leafwings.

This is a beautiful Native Prairie.

We had so much fun hunting bugs today.

Sherry,

Delightful series of photos especially the bunting. Your skipper in the thistle is a female Zabulon Skipper. KUDOs on the goatleaf leafwing, one butterfly I've never seen before.

What a wonderful place. I love seeing the Goatwing butterfly. I don't think I have seen it before.
I am hoping we get some of that rain today. I think it is going north of us. boooo

I always enjoy your safaris on the prairie, Sherry. The super macros of the little insects are amazing! We have some thistle growing wild around the farm here, and I've noticed how much the bees and butterflies love it. The other day a gold finch was perched on top of one blossom, but of course I didn't have my camera.

I missed your post about your new cards the other day. Congratulations on being chosen! I will check this out when I return home from Oregon; these are so beautiful I would love to buy some!

How lovely they all are!
I just adore those thistles- we called them Scotch Thistles, as they are the Scottish Emblem flower. We used to eat the somewhat sweet nutlike centre, once the petals were all plucked off! Seems sad now, to recall how brutal we were to delicate flowers!

Oh I like the thistle too! I'm glad the hummers were out and about, feeding from flowers. At the moment I have an abundance of wasps at my hummingbird feeder. Sometimes they try to chase the birds away!

Your pics are awesome. The details so perfect. And the prarie looks welcoming.
Happy summer - it's winding down.
