She is so beautiful in her gold and green - just like a queen! Do you know how long the eggs incubate for? (you said august - the beginning, middle, end?) Will you be able to watch the babies hatch? How fortunate you are to have observed this, for the dragonfly truly is a magical and ancient insect.
Dear Wendy, Thank you! I am not sure how long before we will see the eggs turn to larva and than into dragonflies. I cannot even find her in my Dragonfly field guide. I would expect a few weeks. I bet by August these eggs will be full Dradonflies. I doubt if I will see the "hatching". They are very wonderful insects. I know very little about the Dragonflies. I have been reading about the birds and the bees and the buttreflioes. I think it is time for me to learn more about the Dragonflies. I deem 2009, the year of the Dragonfly! I will get started now. Dear Northern Shade, "The pitter-patter of little wings" is so cute! I have ordered a couple more books about dragonflies. I am hoping to learn all about them and how to provide habitat. Sherry
What helpful creatures! They eat the mosquitoes when they are larvae, then they eat them again when they are adults. They are always welcome on the river!
