Sometimes, very early on very cool mornings, you can feel the fur on the bumblebees. They are groggy from the cold and don't object to a gentle touch. Your brooch is wonderful, obviously hand made.

ReplyDeleteI do so love the cone flower but sadly they do not do well here.
I added lots of grit to the soil and put them in a raised spot but I do not think they liked the very wet winter here......
I shall just have to enjoy yours!!

ReplyDeleteConeflowers are my favorite flowers, and they must be the bees' favorites, too. Such beautiful photos, Sherry! If I could get up really early one morning, I'd like to try Marnie's idea of petting a bumblebee. The brooch is lovely, just perfect for you.

ReplyDeleteI've just been catching up with your blog (went away for a week while we had builders here and I've been sooo busy clearing up after them since I got back!).
I've really enjoyed reading about all your Sunday safaris - I love the candy striped leafhopper (I've never seen anything like that over here!), the lacewings (we get those, but your close-up of the face of one of them is amazing), and the ebony jewel wings.
I also love your shots of the orange sulphur butterfly you found in your purse - how wonderful to have her sit on your fingers like that - and the wren in your "w" post, which is very similar to our European wrens (I wonder if they're the same?). And your macro furry bees are just gorgeous - I always want to stroke them too, but I've never dared try.
Is it still very hot over there? I don't think it's got up to 99F anywhere over here :o - but the shade temperature has been in the upper 80s in my garden this week and it's very muggy and unpleasant.
