Tiger Swallowtail

The female Tiger Swallowtail had just emerged.
She glittered in the sunlight.
She dried her new wings.
I stood watch.

The Honey Bee thought she was a flower.

Dear French Nest,
I was very excited to see the Tiger Swallowtail! I have so few flowers yet here she was just from the cocoon!
I will set up some butterfly nectar feeding stations tomorrow.
The Hummers are beautiful too. I am looking for them to arrive.
Taking photos of the butterflies is very fun!

Dear Chris,
This female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is about 5 inches (12.6 cm) wing tip to wing tip!
They can be even a bit larger.
She is one of my favorite butterflies.
Last summer I had a few male and females in the gardens. I am looking now for the male. He is all black with iridesent blue markings.
I am so happy to have butterflies again. Now for flowers!

Hi Shelia,
I have been planting for the butterflies and continue to learn what host plants the lava need. The Swallowtails like fennel and parsley. Since these are bi-annuals I plant some every year.
This year I am planting all sorts of host plants and nectar plants. One of these days I hope to have a butterfly and bird sanctuary. Now I need to figure out how to keep the birds from eating the butterflies!

I'm sure I haven't seen a Tiger Swallowtail before...I'd remember it if I did. Very pretty!

Dear Mary,
These are spectacular butterflies.
Common from the Northern parts of Canada down the East coast of the USA and across the Plains and the South. Once you see one you will gasp.
I am excited they are back in my gardens.
