Dear Mon@rch, Very soon many turkeys will be dressed for supper. I am a vegetarian so no birds on my table! There are wild turkeys near my house. Whenever I see them I am wowed. Last week I watched one fly over the roadway I was driving on. Incredible birds! Sherry
Dear Deb, They are beautiful! I love the American Indian way too. The idea that these birds represent giving. Maybe that is why they are the American Thanks-giving bird. LOL Sherry
Turkeys are gorgeous birds. I hope I don't repeat myself but I have seen the most incredible act by a turkey.
My Dearly Beloved and I were walking a path in a woods and a hen turkey started doing a injured wing routine. Now this is cute when a killdeer or other shorebird does this but you can imagine our amazement when this huge bird started throwing itself all around us on this skinny path, screaming at the top of its lungs and dragging itself away from us. We immediatley started looking for her young. There were 6 or so that we saw. They were very young indeed, as they looked like little fuzz balls on straws.
We will never forget the sight and sounds of that huge bird thrashing around as her babies ran for their lives.
Dear Lisa, I love your story. Having experiences out in the wilds with the birds is unforgetable. Your story reminded me of how important it is for us to be protective of habitat! The baby turkeys must have been charming! I bet Mom was a neverous wreck! Thank you for telling your story. I did get tickled. What a cool experience! Sherry
It's so interesting that Benjamin Franklin was rather disappointed that the Bald Eagle became our national bird. His letter to his daughter is clear about his sentiment. It can be found on google.
Dearest Sprite, I also think the noble Turkey would have been the best choice for our national bird. I do love the eagles too. I love the way the Native Americans saw the Turkey as the giver to the people. Each of us has an idea of what the Turkey means..I see them as incredible birds. They remind me to give. Hugs, Sherry
