Sunday Safari

We filled our water bottles
and went bug hunting.

On the wild chicory that grows near the roadway
a Tiger Swallowtail was nectaring.

A Zebra Swallowtail followed us as we hiked.

Colonies of Ebony Jewelwings
greeted us near the water ways.

An iridescent emerald beetle sunned on the path.
Bugs are beautiful!

The only thing that bugs me about these pictures is that there aren't more of them. I just love Zebra Swallowtail. You don't see them as much as you used to.

Nice photos. I particularly like the lighting on the swallowtail in the top one.

Dear Lisa,
Thanks! I post through picassa, a photo program of blogger. Only four pictures will post at one time. It is good for me. Out of over 300 pictures I had to choose my favorite four!
Sometimes I will do two posts in one day just because I want to share pictures.
The Zebra Swallowtails are the only "kite-tailed" butterflies in North America. They are tired closely with the Paw-paw bush. My butterfly book says they are tropical butterflies. I have five Paw-paw bushes in my backyard now.
I have seen Zebra in my backyard. This Zebra was at the Arboratum where my husband and I hiked.
I enjoyed your bees today. Bug hunting is so fun!

Dear Wren,
My husband pulled over when I spotted the Tiger Swallowtail in the wild chicory. I took a nice series of pictures. I asked my husband to help choose the Tiger to share and he picked this one. Glad you also enjoyed it. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are very beautiful!

Dear Chris,
I am so in love with the Ebony Jewlwings!!! Not only are they exquisite but rather friendly. I am trying to rationalize bringing a pair home with me next time we go walking in the woods.
We hiked on Friday too in a different woods and saw a colony. If I can learn enough about them and how to provide habitat I just might. My husband may not think it is a good idea to import bugs but I love this species!
I think they eat mosquitoes. I have lots of those in the gardens.
Maybe the Jewelwings could be my natural bug repellent. I could have a pair or two travel with me in the yard as I pick tomatoes and squash.
Humm...I think I can justify relocating a few.

Ahhhh....
Mother Nature keeps surprising me with her beauty.

Dear Vikki,
We walked for about three hours. This arboratum is very nice. Lots of wild, natural areas and planted gardens. The water ways are kept somewhat wild too. Nice for the Dragonflies.
Next week we are planning to go to a large botanical garden about an hour drive from our house. My husband is enjoying Safari Sunday as much as I am! We have two camera so we both can be taking pictures and hunting.

Dear Cheryl,
If people see how beautiful the bug world is maybe they will get cameras and take pictures rather than kill the bugs! No reason to be scared of bugs!!
I had never seen the Ebony Jewelwings before and I have been bug hunting for many, many years!
I love Sunday Safari!

Dear Rose,
Butterflies could live in my house if they would like to! I love them dearly.
Now that the Jewelwings have come into my life I am all atwitter!

Dear Mimi,
Yes they are!
Ancient too. Without bugs we all would die. Humans need bugs!
I support bug rights. They were here first.

Hi Sherry,
I always enjoy your beautiful photos and they serve as such an inspiration to me. I am always on the lookout for butterflies, but they seem to be few and far between in the Chicago suburbs so far. It is supposed to get into the upper 80's this week and next, so I'm hoping they'll come out soon! In the meantime I'm enjoying the white cabbage butterflies and the hummingbirds!

Do you use any kind of bug repellant when you are in the garden? I don't want to get Lyme Disease, but I feel so funny covering myself (and my kids) in DEET.

Thanks for your wonderful blog,
Laura in Naperville

I learn so many butterflies from visiting here!
And you catch such wonderful images of them--better than in the books!

I've just seen my first Zebra swallowtail and Ebony jewelwing this last weekend!!

Sunday Safari is such a fun idea! You find the most amazing butterflies and bugs & capture them so beautifully!

Dear Laura,
I understand your concern! I use Buzz Away. When out when the mosquitoes swarm you can also wear long sleeves and a collar and a hat!
The loose cotten guazey tops are cool and they also are good for keeping the sun off!
I do like the bugs! When I see the mosquitoes I think, "Oh good, Dragonfly food!"

Dear Anna,
This arboratum is a lovely place. I like the mix of cultivated and wild. It did get hot and very humid by the time we left. Now that the summer heat is on I need to make sure I take water when I go hiking!
Mother Nature continues to amaze me with her beauty.
How are your roses this summer?
When ever I see a beautiful rose I think of you!

Dear Deb,
Doing the bug hunt every Sunday is fun. I sort of do bug hunt every day since I am always looking for the butterflies.
Glad you are enjoying all the bugs.
