Dish Gardens

It was 62 degrees when I was out with the birds this morning.
Strong southerly winds blew moisture up into the atmosphere.
The forecast was for the winds to shift to the northwest around noon.
The temperatures were to start dropping. By 7 pm. it was 11 degrees.
It is to drop to 6 degrees tonight! Sleet and snow over night and into tomorrow.
I put the heater into the bird's water. It is to be cold all week.
Crazy weather!

I came in and started my December gardening. I am creating winter forced bulb gardens.
I have a journal I keep notes in every year.
So very nice to be able recall what I did in the past and how the bulbs performed.
In September I filled the refrigerator vegetable bins with pink and white tulips,
pink and white hyacinths and white and purple crocuses.
Today I planted over two hundred bulbs!
I still have a hundred left to plant.
I am out of containers and soil.

Some of the bulbs are planted in dirt and some are in bulb vases.

I have been collecting bulb vases for many years.

I ended up doing 50 gardens.

The Christmas cactus is in bloom.
In four weeks it will be joined by over two hundred flowers.
Flowers chase away the winter chill.
My house should be very cozy when the north winds blow!

How exciting I can't wait to see them. I have a few hundred bulbs in peat outside waiting for spring. I did not have the energy to get them in the ground. I need to grow a green thumb for indoor plants. I only have 2 seed alive from the lettuce mix. I am going to try till i get it right. I can do good out side but not inside. I just bought a led Led and blue light to see if it helps.

Dear Dawn,
I will post when I have blooms.
I have done the forced bulbs for many years. Every year I do a few more. This year I kept my colors to pink and white and purple.
I know where in the yard I will plant them in April for 20010 blooms!

Dear Grammy,
The forced bulbs are very easy and they always do great. I love having the house filled with flowers in January and February. I have grown lettuce before and spinach and green beans in window boxes on the inside of my living room and dining room windows. The planter boxes sat on the window sill and I used ribbon for the pole beans to climb on. I made living curtains that year!
Lots of fun.
I plant my bulbs in the spring. My gardens are very old and full so I have no idea where I have room for a tulip or a daffodile. By forcing I enjoy the bloom and will let the bulbs ripen off in my basement. Come MAy I will slip them in. They will flower the following year. I have done this for many years and it is always a delight.
Happy indoor gardening.

Oh my gosh Sherry. That is a lot of bulbs to be planting in dishes. I don't even have that many in the ground. Ha... I can't wait to see them blooming.

Dear Cheryl,
I always think think the bulb gardens are beautiful! I think they are beautiful right now, frshly planted, so full of hope. The crystal bowl I put on a glass tray. It looks pretty with a wreath around it. The silver bowl goes on a silver tray. Again wreaths look pretty. I used to worry about having all the bulbs in bloom for Christmas. Now I do up the bulb gardens when I have the time and enjoy them when ever they bloom.
The house always smells wonderful too.

Dear Marnie,
I sometimes will cut the bloom for vases just like cutting tulips outside for inside arrangements! TBulbs are so easy to do. The hard part is remembering to get the bulbs into the refrigerator as early as you can. The bulbs need about 12 weeks of cool...and about 4-6 weeks in the dirt or water before blooming. I like to have them in bloom in January when it is so cold at my house.
Hope you try it next year.

What an explosion of Blossoms you shall soon have! When flowers bloom the heart feels light! How exciting a time when it all happens!

Dear Belen,
Sometimes I also will plant bulbs in the ground in October! I also do lots of the forced bulbs. I love watching them when it is cold outside. As soon as I have sprouts I will post. Blooms will be in about 4-6 weeks.

Dear Deb,
All the window sills are filled with bulb vases! I have a small house so the window sills are like wee shelves for me! I love the way the light shines through the water. I also think the water in all those vases evaporating, helps my house be more comfortable with the added humidity. I keep an eye on the water levels!
Once the bulbs bloom the house feels like a florist shop!

Dear Cathy,
That is so true!
Hubby loves the bulbs. He thinks I am cleaver to have a house full of flowers when it is bitterly cold outside.
I love the flowers too.

Dear Anna,
I look forward to the forced bulbs. I enjoy every part of them. The collecting of the bubl vases is always fun. I found some this year that have the blue delft painting on them. I do my Christmas kitchen in dutch shoes and Dutch designs. I have a few crocus pots that are in the kitchen, all potted up.
It should be pretty when the bulbs come into bloom.

Hi Sherry, I force bulbs too so I can have flowers in my house in the winter. But I usually do about a dozen. You have a hundred? Or two??? Wow! Well, why not? I think I will do that next year. It is so much fun and it looks so pretty. And yes, the hyacinths and paper whites smell so fragrant. Better than pot pourri (which gets dusty after a while).
Can't wait for your pics.
I'm glad you shared this with us.

Dear Wendy,
I think this year I have 350 bulbs to force. I did 223 to get started! I am out of containers!
It is fun and so easy to do. I love all the flowers too.

Your post just reminds me that there still are some boxes with various bulbs waiting to be finally planted ;-) !! What a treat for the eyes when all your planted flowers will bloom!

Dear Barbara,
If your bulbs have had their cool period they would work for forcing!
I love having the tulips in January!
I checked all my pots this morning and gave refreshing water to those that needed some. I see I have some sprouts! Once they bulbs start they continue at a rather quick pace. I am looking forward to blooms.
