It was time to walk the gardens and see how they have fared
through this hot summer.
It was a delight to see many butterflies.
This pair of Tawny Emperors only had eyes for each other.
The Question Mark is also called Violet Tip.
The Autumn brood has brighter markings than the spring brood
and they have violet-gray tails.
These are the butterflies that hibernate.
Red Spotted Purples shimmered in the sunlight.
These Admirals prefer to nectar on rotting fruit and sap.
This is a photograph of a female.
Her extra white wingtip marking is her id marking.
Viceroys are mimics of the Monarch.
Birds avoid them thinking they are distasteful
like the Monarchs.
Many Buckeyes graced the gardens.
The Variegated Fritillaries were abundant.
Dragonflies
and Cicadas are ancient species.
We brought a picnic.
After our sandwiches we walked to a small pond.
The algae was other worldly.
Water Lilies are ancient plants.
Lots of Hummingbirds were flying about.
It was a warm summer day.
Late tonight the Moon is New.
It is the New Sunflower Moon.
August is slipping away.
Soon we will greet September.

Aaah Powell Gardens, so beautiful.
A lovely memory for me...
Wonderful to see so many butterflies, exquisite images as always. I saw a blue yesterday and was so excited, he fluttered through the garden, so I did not get an image. Perhaps if the weather warms up he may come back.
The frog looks like something out of a Science Fiction film with all the algae around him :)
Obviously the extreme weather has created the problem.

What a feast for the eyes this is! I agree with Lisa--you have outdone yourself this time, Sherry. The first photo is amazing. The Red Spotted Purple is a butterfly I'm not familiar with--what a beauty!
I'm glad insects eventually evolved into smaller species:) But I agree the Cicada looks like a holdover from prehistoric times.

I love the algae-covered frog! Those mirror image butterflies in your first photo are spectacular, but my favorite is the Buckeye. We are in Sept now - have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

These days I see quite a few dragonflies.
Sounds like Powell Gardens is a nice place to visit.
Your butterfly photographs are great and especially, third one is spectacular. How impressive way you took all photographs. I tried to took photographs same way, but never succeed.
