Eastern Comma

I was out on the deck reading.
I glanced up and saw an Eastern Comma
on one of the gourds in a nearby basket.
She was basking in the late afternoon sunlight.
The gourds looked so pretty with a butterfly on them.
I think she saw the rotting fruit.
She flew to a deck post

and on over to the rotting nectarine.
I have a dish of fruit set out for the butterflies.
It is their October treat.

Dear Cathy,
I always go through fond farewells in October! Seeing the Eastern Comma was excellent. This tells me they will be about on warm winter days. Many of the butterflies hibernate! I have been watching the afternoon temperatures and I see if it is in the low 50's and sunny the butterflies are about.
I am watching and taking lots of photos.

Dear Mary,
Lots of the butterflies like rotting fruit. Bananas work great for nectar bowls. Apples are not as easy for them to sip the sweet juice out of, the bunnies get my apple cores anyway. I find soft, fleshy fruit is best.

Hi Tom,
They are very pretty. The Commas are smaller than the Question Marks and not as much "gray-blue" tipping on the wing edges.
I do have birds in the back yard but I know they will be here all winter not so with the butterflies!

Dear Nita,
Thank you for the Smiles Award.
So glad Corner gives you a place of ease. We all need a place we can go when we need a break from the trials of everyday living.

Dear Chris,
Lots of October butterflies!
Seeing the Swallowtail was very exciting.. This year I am keeping track of first days and last days. This way I will know what to expect in the future.
