Marking the calendar

The Great Backyard Bird Count begins Friday, February 15, 2008,
and runs through Monday, February 18, 2008.

If you can spend even one hour during this time period counting the birds in your backyard or a city park it is appreciated and needed. It is easy to submit your count.
This is my 11th year of participating.

You do not need to have lots of birds, they do not need to be rare or unusual. Starlings, House Sparrows and Crows count as do the Blue Birds and the Woodpeckers!
The count is just to see where all the birds are! It is nation wide and this annual count is to help find out how the bird populations are getting along. There is a photo contest too. Last year's winners are on the web site. Fantastic photos. My favorite is of a Pigeon on top of a building in New York City. The skyline is behind the Pigeon. Incredible photograph.

Last year at this time I saw a dozen or more House Finches every day at the feeders. This year I have not seen any. There was a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker drilling holes in the Maple tree last year. Have not seen him this year. The Red-Breasted Nuthatches are here this year. First time I have ever seen them.

I am cleaning the binoculars.
This is an event!
Hope you can join in.

I love your blog and your pictures. I've moved to a place where I have a lot of different birds coming to my feeders and I will try to participate in the count.

Thank you for the link Sherry. We'll participate.

We've had quite a few House Finches and a couple of Woodpeckers besides our usual beautiful Cardinals and other visitors.

I have never done the Cornell watch. We do the Indiana Audubon Feeder Count and have done so for years. Maybe I will get into this Cornell one this year too. Thanks for the link.

Dear Deb,
I think they also are interested in birds in Canada. If you have the time I think your birds could be part of the count too.
I will update in the evenings if I can.
My weekend is getting rather full.

Birds and movies,
dinner and friends,
manicures, pedicures,
it just never ends.

February's
delights are endless,
each day an event.
The month is half over
there is love to be sent!

Venus rises in the Moon
The Geese are flying North
There are buds on the Lilacs
The crocus is coming forth.

Whoops, time to leap!

Have a very Happy Valentine's Day!
Thank you for your frienship,
Sherry

Dear Christie,
I will be thinking of you while I watch and count my birds.
I love the way the birds connect all of us!

Dear Pat,
Some of the bird counts cost money to join in, Backyard Bird Count doesn't. I like that!
When I started I had one small feeder. Now I have seeed and nuts and cracked corn and berries and apples....the entire yard is one big feeding station!
I hope my husband and I can both count together, one in front and one of us in back.
No House Finches only Purple Finches this year.
Strange how that happens.

Dear Mary,
You are so kind! Thank you.
You Make My Day too!
May all you days be filled with Red-headed Woodpeckers and sweet Blue Birds!

Dear Lisa,
Even if you can only do, one hour on one of the days, it does help give a picture of where the birds are on one weekend in February.
Keeping an eye on the birds can tell us so much about the state of the environment.
It is fun too!
