Fresh Seed

The Cone Flower seed is ripe.

I never get any for my seed box.

I don't really mind.

I would rather the Gold Finches have fresh seed.

Now Sherry, that is cruel....you know that I am having trouble with my bird photographs and you post the most beautiful photographs of the goldfinch.....as it is you, I forgive you......lol

Your blooms are fading and seeds are coming....isn't it beautful to see the birds on the blooms......
do you grow your plants from seed and are they easy?? If so I may try.....

A lovely post, as always......

Dear Cheryl,
So glad you enjoyed these pictures. It was cloudy this morning and the Gold Finches looked so bright! So often in the sunlight my birds and butterflies wash out. I have to use filters when it is bright out. Morning or early evening light or cloudy days are best for photos for me. Light is everything when it comes to pictures. Your bird photos are coming along nicely.
I love seeing the birds eating the seeds and the berries of the different plants.
I do grow many of my plants from seed. I think seed is easy. I love sowing my seeds and watching for sprouts.
I will buy some plants if I cannot find seed. Trees and bushes I do buy. I grow native as much as possible and organic and heirloom.
There are a few sources I buy from. When ever I can I gather my seed and dry it and sow the next year. Seed to seed gardening is what I call it. It is my favorite! Right now I am gathering Bright Eye Cosmos. It is an annual here and will self sow. I like to have some seed just in case self sowing doesn't happen.
My cocks comb are blooming. I really like them for Autumn decorating. These I save seed from too and let as much as possible self sow.
Do try seed. Seed to seed is very wonderful. I think your Grandchildren would enjoy saving seed and sowing their seeds.

Yummeh! I never dead head my coneflowers either. It's too much fun watching the goldfinches.

Lovely information Sherry.....tku re bird photography.....I am absorbing all this information and learning.....

I do grow from seed but some plants are quite difficult.....the coneflower is one I will try.....I will collect some seed and try next year....

The grandchildren have grown marigolds and californian poppies in pots....they like watching them grow......I started them with easy plants, as children are disappointed if magic doesn't happen overnight......

Hi Sherry,
I was just eyeing my fading coneflowers and thought I'd go out and deadhead them once the sun lowered a bit - now I think I'll leave them!

Sherry, goldies are golden :o) My coneflowers don't look too good. Perhaps we need more rain - or the Goldies have stripped them.

Dear Lynne,
I have a few stands of cone flowers. Every year I think I will get some seed but the Gold Finches beat me to them! I do want to enlarge my cone flower bed next year so I will buy seed again!

Dear Cheryl,
You are so welcome!
Some plants are easier to grow from root divides. Cone Flower starts from seed easily in my gardens. I direct sow when the soil warms, the first of May.
Children do like fast sprouts!
Saving seed is fun.
I bet gardening with your Grandchildren is a delight...
Ahhh..

Dear Mary,
Some deer came into my garden and stepped on some of the cone flowers. I think the Finches are feeding on them from the ground!

Lucky you to have the chance to observe this beautiful goldfinch. What a pleasure to have so colourful birds in the garden. Your photos are great...as always!

Dear Barbara,
The male Goldfinch is a bright one in his Summer feathers. Come winter, after his Autumn molt, he will be a drabber "greenish" yellow. I look for the beginnings of Goldfinch molt to help me know when Autumn is here. Oftern the weather will cool only to blaze hot again!
You also have some lovely birds in your garden. Love your Swiss Woodpeckers!
