Green Monday

I found this amazing book. I was inspired by the cover.
I am reading and learning and finding inspiration on every page.

Lots of fantastic ideas on living a sustainable and organic life style in a beautiful way! I am always looking for more ways to do this.

I do not have a cabinet I can devote to cleaning supplies. At least not yet! This photograph has inspired me to get one! I also am inspired to gather lovely baskets and containers for my supplies. I shall be reusing jars and bottles. When I shop I look at the containers my products come in. I buy glass jars and nice boxes and bags, things I can reuse.

I use lots of lavender. Last year I filled this jar with dried lavender. I have used almost all of it. Hopefully I will have a nice harvest again this season. I am thinking of adding a few more lavender plants to my hedge this Spring. It is easy to grow and beautiful in the garden.

I love the idea to use baby booties for lavender bags. I am getting ready to store my winter woolens. I will wrap them in muslin and tie them with a ribbon. Each item will have a bag of lavender and rosemary to help keep the moths away. It was suggested in this book to put your clean woolens in the freezer over night to make sure any moth larva are killed. I clean my woolens with dry baking soda and a soft brush. I shake them and air them before storing. Now I will make sure they spend the night in the freezer! This is so much nicer than taking them to the dry cleaners. Easier on the woolens and the environment.
My friend gave me a basket of clothes pins that had been her mother's. This style is so nice for hanging woolens out. They do not mark the fabric like the ones with the springs do.

The suggestion to take your clothes out of the closet and air on the clothes line on a frosty day really appeals to me. I like this idea for coats. Turning the pockets out and brushing the coats with a soft clothes brush is an excellent way to clean them. A small bag of lavender in the pocket is nice. I store my coats in cloth bags. These are old sheets I just sew up. The time I spend taking care of my woolens means they last for many years. I buy the highest quality I can and a classic style. I check each item before it is stored for loose buttons. I mend and prepare my clothing for storage. Come Autumn it is always a pleasure to take my woolens out of storage.

I use lots of baking soda and white vinegar in my cleaning.

I buy both in bulk.

Fresh blooming Hyacinths add beauty and sweet aroma to my house.

Spring is just around the corner and the birds will begin nesting.
We took one of our coconuts and made a little wren house

the other sits by the spinning wheel for pieces of roving that are scraps.
I thought the birds might enjoy them for nesting material.

It is time for me to feed the birds.
I am working on my bird seed containers.
I need a cabinet for all of those supplies too.

Dear Sherry.....as busy as a little bee......I have a similar book (readers digest). It is wonderful to learn the old ways....

I to store my woolens with lavender and use baking soda and vinegar....wonderful cleaners. I did not know about putting jumpers in the freezer, I must do this. When we first moved here we had lots of problems with moths....you live and learn......

I love the storage cupboard....I wish I had room for one....it looks beautiful doesn't it. It makes you want to open the door, take out the cleaners...and throw open all the windows.......and start cleaning...

My friend (the woodsman) made pegs for me......they look beautiful on the washing line....I treasure them

I love this post, it is so me......we follow the same path again Sherry......

This is a fantastic post. I reuse lots of jars that many of my things come in for storing my brushes and to hold water for cleaning my brushes as I paint. I love the idea of freezing things, but alas, there is not too much cold here or room in the freezer! Vinegar is so useful. We even use it at the butterfly farm to clean our window there!

Dear Cheryl,
I have been having so much fun with my Spring cleaning this year.
Learning new ways is always exciting for me. I loved the idea of putting the wools in the freezer. I also think airing in the winter is a great idea.
I also do not have room in my house for a cleaning cabinet but I am working on that! I cleaned off a set a shelves in my garage and put up some wicker baskets for my rags and cleaning supplies.
I bet your pegs are lovely...special too.
You and I were cut from the same soft cloth....
Hugs,
Sherry

Dear Mimi,
I am enjoying my Spring cleaning so very much I just might continue on into Summer!
Vinegar is one of those must haves! Baking soda too. I think I use lavender water the most. Not only do I wipe the countertops down with it but I drink it too! LOL!
I am always looking for green ways and this book has many ideas.
I think I will share a few more chapters. I love having Green Mondays with you.

Dear Meridith,
You and your little daughter will enjoy harvesting and making sweet lavender wands. I bet she will enjoy being outside with the herbs. Maybe a butterfly will come and she can be delighted by them. Perhaps she will see a bee and you can teach her to be kind and respectful to the bees and all the bugs. I think you Mothering blog is a delight!
Love all your stories,
Sherry

Dear Wendy,
I have lots of plans for the studio! I want all sorts of cabinet and closets! I have a drean of everything having a place and is in it!
I am gathering charming containers now...using the decanter for the white vinegar is nicer than the big plastic jug it comes in! Easier to use too.
I am enjoying my cleaning!
Happy Spring,
Sherry

Dear Bernie,
I am on quest. I would love to be able to reuse 100% that comes into my house...I have to be extra careful on what I purchase so that the packaging is reuseable.
The coconuts are wonderful! The bird house is very cute. Now I hope a wren likes it!

Dear Belen,
I would be honored if you also used a large glass cannister for your lavender. I have three of these, one for rosemary and another for dries roses. I love being able to see the herbs.
I think they look beautiful!

Your Green Monday is great...I have been inspired over the winter to start making our life sustainable...vinegar and baking soda have become larger staples in the house now. It's nice to know that when you clean, you don't have to quarantine the area.

Now you have given me ideas for using our herbs and flowers in new ways...The birdhouse is great and reminds me I need to make a bee house before spring is really here.

Thank you for all these wonderful ideas, Sherry! I like the methods you use to store wool--I hate the smell of clothes after they've been to the drycleaners, and the fumes are supposed to be toxic, as well. I will have to try your ideas instead.

My mother always used the type of clothespins you picture; I haven't seen them in stores in years.

Dear Lisa,
I decided it was time to enjoy my housekeeping. For me that means I need good equipment and lovely tools..even if those tools are rags!

Dear Marmee,
Thinking green when we clean makes for a lovely way of housekeeping.
Spring is a busy time of year. With this cold snap I am back inside cleaning closets!
Happy Spring,

Dear Chris,
I love the idea of an organic and sustainable life style! I am far from there but working on it.
Little bit by little bit, item by item, day by day, I am making progress.
I would love to have solar panels and sky lights...on my list!
I am so happy I am inspiring you to grow and use. Right now I am posting about housekeeping but as we move into summer I will post about storing our herbs and veggies...save your jars!

Dear Rose,
I am so happy you will try cleaning
"dry clean" only with baking soda, a soft brush. Much better on the enviroment and on your health! Those chemicals stay in the clothes and your skin will absorb them. I am very commited to the natural way of life! Also cleaning your garments the natural way is less expensive.
I think the pegs can be bought in craft stores. Sometimes you can find them in secondhand shops too.
It is easy to be green! Fun too.
