Backyard Classroom

My friend's daughter is a Junior in High School. She is taking an Environmental Science class. This semester she is to spend at least eight hours, outside of the classroom, learning about the environment. Today she came to our backyard to learn about Organic Gardening. We toured the yard talking about birds and bees and butterflies.
We discussed companion planting and rotating the "crops".
We talked about the edible landscape; food for humans, bugs and birds.
After our classroom study my husband and I planted our cole crops; swiss chard, kale and broccoli. We planted spinach and three different lettuces and more zucchini. Food for late September, early October and hopefully on into November. One of the Broccoli varieties will winter over and be ready for harvest in March! One of the lettuces is frost tolerant! This is the largest Fall Garden we have ever put in. I am always learning. The back yard is my classroom. The plants, bugs, and birds the teachers.
