Black -capped Chickadee

Once Cooper's Hawk leaves the area
the Black-capped Chickadees come to the feeders.
They are small birds, only 5 inches long
from the tip of their beak to the tip of their tail.

They take a seed and fly to a nearby tree.
Holding the seed between their feet
they crack it open with their beak.

My bird book says the Black-capped Chickadee
can be easily trained and hand fed.

They are very sweet birds.
I have been tempted to hand feed.

The Cardinals are sweet too.
This male is unafraid of me.
I think I could hand feed him as well.
I am not sure I want to start hand feeding the birds.
I would be outside all day.

I knew someone once that would feed their cardinals by hand. I have seen many pictures of people feeding various wild birds by hand but I am usually not still enough to do so. :/

Isn't the black capped chickadee adorable? At our local Botanical Gardens they will feed off of your hand - very tame. Lovely pictures Sherry.

Dear Lisa,
I do think I easily could hand feed the birds. I often think Mockingbird is going to take the bag of raisins if I do not hurry up and get them onto the plate. He waits rather impatiently some mornings.
I do enjoy taking the photos.

Dear Mari-Nanci,
There are lots of birds in my backyard. I would imagine the birds would revolt if the only way to get their seed was to wait in line.
I do scatter seed on the deck by my chair. Many of the birds come right up.

Many other birds will allow you to feed them from your hand but I think you are on track not wanting the Cardinal to take a bite!

Dear Deb,
They are very darling! Maybe this spring when my husband is home on the weekend he can take a few photos of me feeding the birds. I could do a slide show..."Feed The Birds..."
Thank you! When I do get nice photos of the Chickadees I am pleased. I like to see their eyes.
I like crisp feathers...lighting is everything.

If you start hand feeding those bird, I want to see a picture of that. Get Hubby to snap the pic.

Dear Mon@rch,
I would think I would want to have a heavy pair of leather gloves on if Mr. Cardinal was coming for a seed! I am happy to take pictures.
No hand feeding by me.

Dear Cathy,
No worries. I am not likely to tame the birds. I just do not think it is very good for them.
Some are so cute and sweet I do think petting them would be fun.
I will keep snapping their photos.

Black-capped Chickadees are as cute as the Carolina ones. You make me giggle with the commenting about feeding them by hand. When you will be able to take a bathroom break with the Chickadees on your hand?

LOL!

Those dear little birds are so pretty! I love to see them. I tried to catch one of our very plain Shrikes today, but they are camera shy. I put up a link to my post about Sulphur crested Cockatoos.

Dearest Sherry,

Oh what a sweet little Chickadee! The male cardinal is beautiful too.

The trust that you have earned by caring for the birds and wildlife is profound.

I laughed when I pictured mockingbird grabbing the bag of raisins from your hand. Hurry MOM! I'M SO HUNGRY! Tweet Tweet.

Much love and still smiling...

Dear Mary,
The Carolina Chickadees sometimes come to the feeders too. I was hoping to get a photo of them to show the difference. Yours are so cute!
It could be a bother, Chickadees in the house and all. They could break stuff and make a mess. Best for birds to be outside eating on their own.
Last summer I thought maybe I would invite a Tiger Swallowtail to come in for the winter. I adore the idea of butterflies in the house. I realized it was about me and not what was best for the butterfly. Hand feeding the birds is not the best for the birds. It would just be me wanting the experience. I am grateful I can take a few photos and enjoy the birds out on the deck.
LOL! Giggles and smiles,
Hugs,
Sherry

Dear Meggie,
I enjoy the plain birds too. I like the way they blend in with their environment. The Shrikes look pretty. Thank you for showing yours. Your Cockatoo on your deck photo was amazing! Beautiful birds.
Big too.
I am looking forward to reading all of your posts from the past and catching up.
So glad to have met you.
Thank you for linking Corner to your post and side bar.
Stay cool, you are in the heat of it!

Dear Sprite,
I like to think they come to the deck for my company but really it is the seed they come for! Mockingbird is very funny! If I do not get out with the raisins in a timely fashion he comes to the office window! Last night a huge flock of Cardinals (40 maybe) were on the deck. Lots of the seed trays were empty from daytime feeding. One female Cardinal, not my regular one, was very irritated that the trays were low. She let me know too. I stopped fixing supper and refilled the feeders.
They do have their way with me!
I am the one that is trained and tamed.
Hugs and giggles,
Sherry

Dear Sheila,
Hope all is going well for you. Winter can be a low time, I easily can become despondent. The birds help me maintian my joy. The cold is terrible some days! This morning it was 14 degrees. Thank goodness it is sunny.
Glad you also enjoy the Chickadees. They are very pretty and so cheerful.

As a child growing up on the Gulf Coast, many books had pictures of chickadees, but we did not have the real thing. I remember wondering what they really looked like. Perhaps that's one of the reasons we moved to the Ozarks. Now we have plenty of hills, trees and chickadees.

Thanks for sharing the great photos, Sherry.

Dear Marvin,
"Hills and trees and Chickadees", sounds as if you live in a perfect spot! Your pictures always look so lovely. I live in the city...hills and trees and chickadees and powerlines, stop signs and too much asphalt!
I forget about all of that when I am outside, up close, with the birds and the bugs.

Our chickadees sometimes go to the hummingbird feeder and poke around. It looks like they're trying to get whatever the hummers are after. It doesn't seem to hurt anybody - the hummers scold of course!

They do check out every thing! I also have seen them at humminbird feeders. so funny.
