Red-Bellied Woodpecker

The family of Red-bellied woodpeckers

come and go all day long.
Each bird knows me.
They talk with me.

They are not afraid anymore.
I like having the birds about.

A few years ago we hung a commercially made seed encrusted suet ball in our pussy willow tree.
The kind of suet ball made in a mesh bag.
I'm not sure that the woodpecker would normally eat from this (Don't they just eat bugs?) but anyway he he had landed on it, perhaps from curiosity. We saw him there and watched for a while before realizing he was trapped. When we went out to see, sure enough his foot had become entangled in the mesh and he was unable to free himself.
My husband was able to cut the mesh away while I held the bird in a towel. We freed him, but knew that had we not been there he would have perished. I don't know if anyone else has seen this happen?
We stopped buying these balls, and instead bought the type that are formed around a 'lollipop' stick.
Sorry for the long and rambling story, but I relate it when I see these birds, as I am reminded about the sad ending it could have been for one of them.

Woodpeckers are beautiful and I catch me breath when they visit. Now I notice they are intereted in fresh fruit since the suet is gone :o)

Dear Sheila,
Thank you for the tip!
Woodpeckers like bugs and nuts and fruit. The suet ball would have been a yummy treat. I have seen the mesh balls and will stay clear of them!
I bet this was traumatic! Good idea to use the towel.
Thank you again for telling us your story.
Thanks too for Red-bellied rescue.
Wow.

Hi Mary,
My husband and I were just talking about when we first saw Red-bellied and how timid she was.
Now the whole family will come and go while we sit on the deck.
They are beautiful birds.
