Hummingbird Clearwing

The Hummingbird Clearwing
Hermaris thysbe (Fabricius)

appears to be a small Hummingbird
hovering over the flowers.
I had seen one last Autumn in the zinnias.
My butterfly book says there are three broods in my area from early April into September.

This is a diurnal, of the daytime, moth.
I hope I see more!
I would like to see them everyday.

Hi Sherry-
How ironic that you would post about your bee sized hummingbird . I picked up the most beautifully illustrated book "Bird Egg Feather Nest" by Maryjo Koch at the library today. Inside there is a page all about the Bee Hummingbird - a record holder as being the smallest bird in the world (no larger than a bumble bee). If you can - have a look for this book - you will LOVE it!:-}

Hi Deb,
I just "one clicked shopped" and bought the book! It does look to be beautiful and informative!
Thank you for telling me about it.
My Clearwing is a moth!
It does look and act like a tiny Hummingbird but is not. It also acts like a big bee!
I think they are beautiful and am very pleased to have them in the gardens.
Thanks again for telling me about the book I am sure I will enjoy it.
