Red Bellied Woodpecker

I continue to look out and up. The birds know me by the sound of the shutter.
Binoculars around my neck and camera over my shoulder I take my morning garden tour.
I am a tourist in my own backyard.
I am gathering Woodpecker photos.

What a gorgeous big woodpecker! We have one who visits the suet basket in our garden but he is very small compared to yours.

Hi Deb,
The Red Bellied Woodpecker is a big Woodpecker at 10 1/2 inches long. The Yellow Shafted Flickers are evn bigger 12-14 inches! The Pleated Woodpeckers are even bigger, my book says they are 16-19 1/2 inches. I have seen one of them in my life but not in my yard. Their range is as far north as you, in Canada, and they could be in my neck of the woods too. If I had a Plieated Woodpecker in the yard my husband would be very excited!
I bet you have the little Downy Woodpeckers. They are only 6 1/2 inches long. We also have them at the suet cakes. I think they are very sweet.
As I study woodpeckers this month I am learning all sorts of interesting facts about them and their habitat. I do not have any dead tress, their favorite nesting spots, although I think I would not mind a dead large log in back. It would be interesting. Good for bugs, their favorite food.
I so hope you do not grow weary of photos of Woodpeckers. I am taking many pictures of them. I want to get the most all time incredible photo to print and frame for my stairwell.
I do think they are lovely birds.
