Welcome Spring

Spring lays
under a blanket of snow.

The Gold Finches have begun
their Spring molt.

The birds are flocking to the feeders.

The snow began last night and has
continued to fall all day today.

                                                                     It is a wet snow.
I hope the butterflies and bees
found warm shelter.
Some of the daffodiles were in bloom yesterday.
I cut a few for the kitchen table
knowing snow would break their stems.
I feel sad.
I am saying goodbye to Picses.
It is difficult to welcome Spring
when she wears a  cold white dress.
 I turn to my books.
I will gather clover another day.
I look to the art of Spring

and the traditions of Spring.

I am reading

and chasing Spring in my dreams.
The calendar says it is Spring.
Father sky says it is Winter.

First Butterfly of the Season

An Eastern Comma butterfly
came to the deck.

It was warm this afternoon, 63 degrees.

I put a few pear pieces out just in case a
butterfly woke up
and was hunting for sweet juice.

The bees also like rotting fruit.
I was so very excited to see
the first butterfly of the season.

The wind shifted to the northwest.
The temperatures began to drop.
Snow is on the way.

St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I am celebrating indoors.

Rain is keeping me out of the garden.
Too muddy to plant potatoes.

I am enjoying silence.
I am enjoying the rain.

My books entertain me.

Every March I read folktales of Ireland.

I am fascinated.

This is a rich culture.

Books lay open for quick reads.
I walk by and read a page or two.

I keep a readers journal.
I often refer to my notes.

Every year I try to learn a new skill.

Each month there are different motifs,
different special days.

This March I read about the Irish in America.

I am in love with words.

I wish you a
"Top O' The Mornin" and
a song for your heart.

May you know the beauty of the
Shamrock.
May you hear the ringing of the Fairy bells.

Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Happy wearing of the green.

Ides of March

It is the Ides of March,
beware!

The sun came out this afternoon.

                                                            The crocus opened.

I was pleased to be out in the sunshine.
When I came in it was already 7pm.
It takes me a few weeks to get used to
                                                               Daylight Saving time.

The birds are always on sun time.
I was very pleased to see sprouts
 in the winter sowed containers.

I have four containers of Sweet William
and two of Lulu Lupine.

All 6 were sowed on February 6th.

I wrote all about the sprouts and the crocus
in my Garden Journal my friend sent.

I keep a record of the birds and bugs too.

This Book of Days is almost filled.
2010 will be the last year for this book.
There are lots of birds and bugs that call every year.
