Bitter cold

It is very cold.
Even with sunshine and bundled up
I cannot stay outside
for very long.

There are six Blue Jays that are coming to the deck
each morning for their peanuts.

A large flock of Gold Finches were finding food
at the different feeders this morning.

The Pine Siskins stayed for the snow and the cold.

My trees are full of birds.

Dear Sherry....it does look so cold.....the birds look cold.....I love the last photographs, it reminds me of beautiful decorations on a christmas tree......

I love the blue jay......I have a jay in the garden at the moment.....ours just has a patch of blue.....he is pretty. Lapwings have also flown into the area.....I saw them yesterday, they flew over the house.....their wings looked like black and white lace as they went by. They are rare now....I wait every year for them to visit.....sometimes they will stay for several weeks but this time they did not stop.....perhaps they will come back........

It is milder here......temperatures will reach 11C 53F at weekend.....crazy weather.......

Great shots. I was shocked to see blue jays swallow pecans in the shell this summer. Then you say peanuts. are they in shell or out?
I is amazing cold here too. but the say it will get warmer. As I sit here in my blankey.

Nice to have the birds to keep you warm. That bluejay looks so vibrant. Even the white part of him looks pure as snow.

Sherry, your birds are such a delight! It's been such nasty weather here, much like yours; I'm sure your birds are appreciating the extra treats you are providing for them.

I'm catching up on posts and saw all your dish gardens--I am so impressed! Your house will really be "blooming" when all these bulbs come up.

Hello Kanak,
Thank you! I have around 150-200 birds in the backyard on any given day. The little flocking birds make up a huge part of the backyard bird family.
When we have a weather event they all come at once and stay!
I love them.
Nice to meet you. I am looking forward to popping over to your journal and learning about you and your backyard!

Dear Cheryl,
It is very, very cold. Early in the winter for this cold too. My trees are full of Cardinals and Blue Jays and Doves...lots of Doves. They do look like Christmas Tress all decorated with living birds.
I love hearing about your birds. Your Jay is different as are the Jays at my daughter's house. She has Scrub Jays.
I looked Lapwings up in my Birds of Britian book. I bet they look beautiful flying over in their black and white plumage. My book does not give much information. I shall do a google search and see how big they are.
You will be warning up! Niv=ce to be able to get outside and do some cleaning up weather. We are to get just up to freezing with freezing rain this afternoon and into tonight. I will put extra food out for the birds. More are finding the backyard. I have lots of feeders. LOL...lots...
I will stay warm and dry.
Hope you enjoy your before Christmas activities.
Namaste,
Sherry

Your bird photos are just great. I had a much lighter, almost grayish, blue jay at my feeders yesterday. He is new, I would remember that silvery blue color.

Bitter cold...we 'tis the season this year. The first picture and the last really capture the cold with the birds so fluffed up. I barely see the birds that hang around here anymore.

Dear Grammy,
I think the Jays can hold nuts in their throats and "cough" them up later. I see my Jays taking two peanuts, in the shell, and fly off. I think they have hiding spots so they have food when it is cold and snowy!!
It seems early for us to have such cold temperatures. I saw the long range and more artic air is on the way down.
Hope you can stay in and stay warm.

Dear Marmee,
My trees are filled with birds.
They are pretty.
I too love the birds in the snow. If we get ice I will be outside taking pictures of birds in the ice. Last year we had an ice storm and when the sun came out it was awesome! I do worry for the trees when we have ice.
Staying warm,
Sherry

Dear Wendy,
The birds help to keep my spirits up! Without them I think I would be depressed every winter.
Hope you are having fun getting ready for Christmas.

Dear Rose,
The birds are fun!
I saw a tiny bit of green on one of the tulips! I hope the bulbs are as beautiful this year as in the past. I do love having the tulips in January!

Dear Lisa,
I just heard thunder!
It has warmed up to 28 degrees and freezing rain is on the way...
I do hope the birds will be okay.

Dear Dawn,
I think the Blue Jays are very pretty too. They are rather bold so they get their photos taken often!

Dear Marnie,
I have read that the color of the Jay is reflective light not pigmet!
Sometimes my Jays look almost gray.
The study of light is amazing.

Dear Chris,
I have seen Cardinals so puffed up they look like stuffed birds!
Amazing how they can stay warm when it is so cold.
It seems as if the bitterly cold temperatures are early this year.
Did you get the big blizzard I heard about?
Stay warm. Stay safe.
