Rainy Day

I am making slippers today
from some wool I felted last week.

I found a book yesterday at the secondhand book sellers
on Stumpwork Embroidery.

I would like to learn how to do this.
I would like to put bees on my slippers
and spiders on my hats!
It is a rainy, cold November day,
perfect for crafting.

Sounds like fun! I'd never heard of raised embroidery before. I have a framed work of embroidery (the regular kind), hanging on my wall, that my mother made when she was a girl. It was required learning at school for young ladies in those days.
I hope you enjoy your new hobby.

Dear Deb,
You are right! Felting has opened a whole new world and has re-ignited my love of handcrafting.
The dress form is a dream come trues too! I have always wanted one. I have been tracking the shipment too. On time for the 13th!
I shall welcome her into my home and my life. I see many jackets and skirts being created.
Hugs,
Sherry

Dear Lisa,
I will see if Tim is interested in "needle in the wool" for a card. I thought it would be an interesting photograph when I saw my needle waiting for me after I had left my sewing to answer the telephone.
I am gathering my threads and my needles. It has been years since I embroidered. I am looking forward to creating all sorts of bugs!

Dear Wendy,
My mother was a painter with thread. She did all sorts of fantastic embroidery. I have many of her pieces. I did the crewel work and she the fine threads. Neither of us ever did the raised or stumpwork. It is fantastic.
I treasure my mother's work too. It is nice you have your mother's work framed. My mother learned embroidery from the nuns at her grade school. I have one of her samplers.
I am having lots of fun learning a new technique! It is exciting to know I am never too old (or too tired) to learn. I may need to make a sampler of the different stiches.
I actually am looking forward to Winter this year so I have time to craft.

Dear Cheryl,
I would love to make bees for my slippers! I see dragonflies for my shoulders and spiders for my hats and butterflies floating on my purses. I love the way this style of embroidery is 3d. The wings are made with fine wire and covered in metalic threads. I do think once I learn to do bees I will be able to do all the winged insects. I will be sure and share my bees! You love them as much as I do. This winter, when it is too cold to play with real bees I will play with threads and beads and make bees.
We will have fun.

My daughter calls my thrift store sweaters made into hats and bags and slippers, "Up cycling."
