Sun dog

The sun added ten degrees
to the feel of the air.

I sat outside this afternoon with the birds.

Wrapped in my blanket I was warm.

The Juncos came to the deck,
they are my winter friends.

A sun dog shone in the southern sky.

There is ice in the clouds.

Your bird pictures are great...I don't need to worry over our lack of feathered friends when I can visit your blog!

I love your fat, puffy and cute birds. I'd never heard of a sun dog. Thanks for the info.

The cardinal is my favourite. I wish he was over here by my house, I just think he is beautiful.

Hi Sherry,
My dad always called the juncos "egg birds" because their bellies look like big white eggs. Now I hear myself telling the same thing to my girls!
I love your photos, especially the mourning doves from your previous post. They are my favorite birds!

It was overcast and rainy here, but today (Monday) we had the sun. One advantage I've found in the leaves falling is that you can see the birds so much more clearly.

The juncos are sweet; I'm wondering if they are the birds that have been visiting me lately? I need to learn how to identify more of them, but I'm learning from your posts, Sherry.

Dear Chris,
In the winter I depend on the birds. I find myself missing the bugs so very much. I do have a plan this year so I do not slip into January depression. Not too far from my house there is a butterfly indoor habitat. I plan on visiting. I also am felting and creating fun hats and bags. Yesterday I decided to learn a new to me, old seventeenth century, form of embroidery called stumpwork. I want to create 3-d bugs with beads and thread for my felt!
It is raining this morning. I will put my rain gear on soon and feed the birds. I do hope we have birds all winter!

Dear Wendy,
The birds were staying warm!
I cannot puff up like them so I must snuggle up in my blankets.
Sun dogs are cool. We do not see them very often. My husband was out picking up leaves when he saw this one. He came in to get me and a camera. I was grateful to have photographs.
Hope you are staying warm.

Dear Suacy,
The Cardinlas are my favorites too. I love the wren's song and all the little song birds are delightful. I think the Blue Jays are fun and the hawks fantastic. Yet at the end of the day it is the Cardinals I long to see.
Sun dogs are very interesting. We were sure our weather was going to become cold and wet soon. No snow yet but plenty of rain.
Hugs,
Sherry

Dear Lisa,
Cloudy and rainy today at my house. I am inside getting ready to felt.
I like rainy days.
Glad you are getting some moisture. You really do need it.
Have fun inside. Maybe it is a painting day for you?

Dear Deb,
Snow??? The birds seem to know when it is going to snow. I love the little Juncos. They have been here for a few weeks already.
Hope you are staying warm.

Dear Marnie,
I saw 8 last night on the deck around sunset. By mid winter last year I had up to 3o! I think all the Cardinals were successful with their broods this past summer. I could have a huge flock of Cardinals if the weather turns cold and icy.
I was reading about how and when the Cardinal began moving north. They are dependant on our feeders now. If I am late getting seeds out the Cardinals will come to the window sill and let me know!
I love them.

Dear Cheryl,
Thank you dear friend. I do think of you often when I am out with the birds and bugs! When it is cold I will wrap up and sit outside on the deck with my coffee or hot tea. It is my solitude time. It is how I connect.
I love the talking skies too. Sun dogs mean ice is in the air. I knew we would be having cold, rainy or snowy weather within 48 hours. There are Moon dogs too. They are rare. My husband watches the skies. He has taught me much.
Thank you for being with me,
Sherry

Dear Anna,
We are simple people! It doesn't take much to please me.
Beautiful friends like you bring a smile to my face and my spirits soar.
Hope you are enjoying November.
I have squirrels in the seed feeders...Time to put some nuts out for them.
Hugs,
Sherry

Dear Laura,
I love the way colloquialisms are kept alive generation after generation. You know why your Dad called the Juncos "egg birds" so often we forget where or why! Your girls are cnnected to Grandpa instantly by your carrying his ways forward. I just love that.
I had not posted photographs of the Morning Doves for awhile. I have a balanced sized flock that comes to the feeders. Copper's Hawk has been good at keeping the numbers in line.
Thank you for coming by and leaving a comment.
Namaste,
Sherry

Dear Maria,
I think the raccoons love you!
The pictures of the one relaxing on your glider after a nice supper of cat food is so funny.
You are fun!

Dear Marmee,
No Juncos? Hummm...I do not know their range. They winter in my area and breed up north.
The telephoto lens makes all the difference!
Your photographs are lovely too.

Dear Rose,
Once the leaves fall the birds are MUCH easier to photograph too.
Having a few field guides is nice. Even so I often have trouble iding. Lisa is my backup. she knows her birds!
Stay warm and dry. It is wet at my house.
