Do I remember correctly..? I think I read somewhere that there is a species of butterfly that will only eat from milkweed? Is it this one? She is a beautiful colour..!
Fall is already here where I live my friend. My yard is full of leaves. The nights are cold. Indian summer will bring warm weather again sometime in September, but just for a few days.
Hi Sheila, This butterfly is the female Tiger Swallowtail in her black form. The Monarchs need the milkweed for laying eggs. It is the only food the Monarch caterpillers will eat. The nectar in the blooms of the Milkweed are tasty for the Tiger Swallowtails. Of all the butterflies the female Tiger in her black dress is my favorite. Sherry
Dear Saucy, Oh my cool nights!!! Leaves on the ground, I am looking forward to that! I am not looking forward to the butterflies leaving. I am enjoying as much as I can right now. The horrid heat is keeping me indoors too much. I like to be outside! Indian summer comes in November for me. Now with the climate change it could be December! All I want to do right now is spend as much time as I can with the Hummingbirds and the butterflies! Sherry
Hi Nita, So very happy to meet you. The female black Tiger Swallowtail is very beautiful! Her mate is yellow and black and is stunning. There are yellow and black females as well. So glad you enjoy the photos. I do let the birds and bugs do most of the talking! Sherry
Dear Naturegirl, I am so fond of this butterfly. I took a nice series of photos of her on the milkweed. I think this one I will print. She is my favorite. Sherry
Dear Sprite, After I saw the Tiger I felt so relaxed. I laid down and took a two hour nap! I had been outside walking earlier and the heat was just too much. Resting was very good. I cannot express the joy I feel when I see this butterfly. I do not feel as if I have the "right" habitat for the butterflies yet. So it is a blessing to me that they come and nectar for awhile each day. I am very grateful. As I look at how the different weeds grow I am coming up with ways of intergrating the volunteers into the flower beds. I am finding ways of making the wild-tame. Or at least decrative! It is like "bonsi". A city lot that has a mini meadow, forest and glade. Sherry
