Scarborough Fair

Parsley,
sage
rosemary
and thyme.
A summer thunderstorm is on the way.
I can hear the thunder.
I am singing Scarborough Fair.

Just when I needed to read something special from Sherry - you delivered. Simon & Garfunkle. Wonderful. I am singing. We had a storm tonight. Short but sweet. I wish you the same.

Hi Naturewoman,
I put my glasses on so maybe I make too many errors here!
Thanks, just fun.
It is a grand song.

Dear Deb,
I saw Paul Simon on PBS just recently. I used to sing along with the radio when I was a teenager. I knew all the words to all the top 40 hits.
Summertime brings those songs of the 60's back to me.

Dear Mari-Nanci,
That is a Black Swallowtail caterpillar. There are two on this stand of parsley. I was checking the parsley to see if there were any!
They are pretty. Even more beautiful when they are Black Swallowtails!
I planted more parsley seed today too. The parsley is a bi-annual so every year I plant seeds so I have a steady suppy for the Black Swallowtails to lay eggs on.
I have Fennel too for them.
It is called a host plant.
I love hostessing Black Swallowtails!

Dear Kate,
My favorite of all the herbs is lavender. I use it for so many things! I guess I am a Lavender Lady!
I grow basil too. I make my pesto for winter with it. It is a great companion plant for tomatoes. I grow lots of different varieties. I like herbs and so do the butterflies. Nice way to add scent to the gardens and the house and savory for the table.
A herb fair is so nice.
Years ago I made herb wreaths from my garden herbs. I sold them and gave them as gifts. I grew large thyme back then and used it to form the wreath. I had a large herb garden. Lots of fun in the sun!

Dear Mary,
Thank goodness for wee storm!
The hot and dry can be so hard on one's spirit. My friend moved to western Kansas just as they were beginning a seven year drought,(Conserative Christians only have seven year droughts). By the middle of July she was spent! The wind and the sun and the dry just about did her in.
Glad you are singing.
I did get the cooler temps, just a spot of rain but I think more is coming.
I have been thinking of you.
"Hot town summer in the city, back of my neck getting dirty and gritty."
That's me!

Dear Mary,
The winds in western Kansas would send me back East very quickly!
I am amazed my friend can garden!
The rains have returned for her but summers are hot and dry.
I have driven through Kansas many times on my way to Colorado. The sunflower fields are beautiful.
I sat in a field one time and had a marvelous experience with a sunflower.
The Tumbleweeds also are divine!
I would always gather a few for my gardens when we traveled through "Tumbleweed Country."
I made a cd sampler of all the different renditions of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds". As soon as we were in striking distance of tumbleweeds I would put it on. My husband never minded. He just whistled along. I can't whistle.

Dear Herb/Star Sister,
friend and fellow Moonbeam traveler and lover of Mother Nature,
Yes! Herbs are gifts from our Mother.
I grow as many as I can.
The Swallowtails will continue to lay eggs all summer. You have lots of time for one to find your parsely.
Hopefully you will have rain and cool down very soon.
I enjoyed your garden post. I felt as if I was right with you and your roses.

Dear Pat,
Thank you!
I love the herbs with bugs on them!
I do not pick the parsely, it is just for the Swallowtails.
The rosemary I do use! This year, since I almost lost all of it, I am leaving it to grow as big as it can. I will do some layering to propagate. My old hedge was huge. It is start over for the rosemary but she did live.

Dear Sprite,
I do understand! Some years, life is different!
Lots of my herbs are perennials.
I do plant basil seed and parsely every year.
As I redo the growing spots every bed will get its herb.
Thank you!
I had fun doing this essay.
